Our Story

Why Leading Wings Exists

Leading Wings emerged from a journey of technology, leadership, learning, experimentation, and community engagement, and from a growing realization that the greatest barriers to progress are often not the absence of possibilities, but the gaps in capability required to realize them.

From an idea shaped by experience to an institution being built for the future.

Our beginning

From Experience to Institution

The story of Leading Wings began with a growing realization that technological progress alone does not create meaningful change. People, organizations, and societies need the capabilities to understand, adopt, and apply new possibilities.

In the words of our Founder, Iyke Ogoegbulem.

2015The Experience

The Experience

In early 2015, I served as an Operational Support Officer to one of the first Combat UAV detachments in the Nigerian Air Force. The experience left me with a lasting impression of how emerging technologies could transform the way people, organizations, and societies operate.

A year later, spending much of 2016 in China exposed me to profound applications of emerging technologies in everyday life. By around 2017, I wanted to learn how to operate a small drone myself, only to discover that there were very few UAV training opportunities available in Africa at the time.

The contrast made something increasingly obvious: technology was advancing rapidly, but the capabilities required to understand and apply these possibilities remained limited.

2017The Insight

The Insight

What began as a desire to learn how to operate a drone became a much larger question:

Why are the capabilities required to understand, adopt, and apply emerging technologies so limited?

I began to see that the challenge was not simply access to technology. It was the gap between technological possibility and the human, institutional, and ecosystem capabilities required to turn that possibility into value.

That realization shaped a personal commitment: to become deeply knowledgeable about emerging technologies while contributing to the capabilities required for their responsible and practical adoption.

2021The Pursuit

The Pursuit

For nearly a decade, I pursued this objective through professional practice, operational experience, education, training, research, and continuous personal development.

This journey included aviation, UAV and RPA operations, technology leadership, project and operations management, and leadership development, culminating in certification as a Combat RPA Pilot in 2021.

But the deeper question continued to evolve beyond becoming technically proficient:

How can technology leadership translate into sustainable capability development?

2024The Turning Point

The Turning Point

In 2024, I was selected for the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. My Focus Project examined the skills, awareness, and policy challenges inhibiting the widespread commercial adoption of unmanned aircraft systems in Nigeria.

The experience broadened my perspective. I began to understand that technology adoption could not be approached as a technology problem alone.

Policy, leadership, skills, enterprise, infrastructure, awareness, institutions, and ecosystems all influence whether technology creates meaningful impact.

I began to see the need for a capability-based approach to technology leadership and adoption.

2023–24Experiencing the Future

Experiencing the Future

Some experiences made this contrast particularly vivid.

In 2024, I experienced a Waymo autonomous vehicle navigating the streets of Downtown Phoenix, Arizona. A year earlier, in Chengdu, China, I had received a hotel delivery from a robot.

These experiences revealed the extraordinary possibilities emerging from advances in artificial intelligence, navigation, robotics, batteries, sensors, and autonomous systems.

But they also raised a difficult question:

How do we ensure that the capabilities required to benefit from such advances are developed in places where these possibilities still seem far removed from everyday life?

2024–25The Initiative

From Idea to Initiative

By August 2024, a team of co-founders and volunteers had begun coming together around this emerging vision.

In December 2024, Leading Wings organized its first major initiative: a free introductory drone training programme for underserved young people aged 15–25 in Yola, followed by a second session in Makurdi in January 2025.

Nearly 100 people from five countries applied, with 50 ultimately participating.

The response was encouraging, but it also revealed something important.

Leading Wings initially appeared to be becoming a drone organization. Yet the experience made clear that drones were only one part of a much larger capability gap.

2025The Evolution

From Technology to Capability

Since January 2025, Leading Wings has expanded beyond its initial technology activities to facilitate subject-matter dialogues, leadership development sessions, high-school technology programmes, campus professional outreaches, mentoring and skills-development clinics, youth and sports development initiatives, advisory engagements, consulting activities, and community programmes.

Through these activities, initiatives, partnerships, and support, LW has reached more than 1,000 people across multiple Nigerian states and other African countries.

The lessons have been consistent. Whether working on technology, leadership, policy, professional development, advisory services, innovation, or community engagement, the underlying challenge is often the same:

There are gaps between where people and organizations are today and the capabilities they need to navigate where the world is going.

Leading Wings has therefore evolved from its early technology-focused beginnings into a Strategic Foresight and Capability Development outfit.

Our work is now focused on looking beyond immediate challenges, identifying underlying gaps, building capability, and helping people and organizations navigate rapid change toward a more sustainable future.

What began as a personal pursuit of technological expertise has become a broader institutional mission: to anticipate change, bridge capability gaps, and help people and organizations turn emerging possibilities into meaningful impact.

Why Leading Wings

Bridging the Capability Gap

The world is changing rapidly.

Technology is transforming security, economies, organizations, industries, and everyday life. Yet technological progress does not automatically translate into meaningful impact.

People and institutions need the capabilities to understand change, anticipate what is coming, develop relevant knowledge and skills, make informed decisions, innovate, execute effectively, and adapt continuously.

Leading Wings exists to bridge the capability gaps that prevent people and organizations from turning emerging possibilities into meaningful and sustainable impact.

CHANGEThe world shifts faster than institutions adapt.
GAPPossibility outpaces the capability to use it.
CAPABILITYPeople and institutions build what is required.
IMPACTPossibility becomes meaningful, lasting value.

Our vision

A More Capable Africa

A future where people, organizations, and communities across Africa, and beyond, possess the capabilities to anticipate change, navigate complexity, create value, and shape sustainable futures.

Our mission

Building Capability for a Changing World

We help people and organizations anticipate change, build capability, and turn emerging possibilities into meaningful impact.

We do this by connecting strategic foresight, knowledge, leadership, technology, enterprise, research, innovation, and action.

What we believe

Our Philosophy

We believe sustainable progress requires more than ideas and technology. It requires people and institutions with the capability to understand change, make informed choices, act with purpose, and continuously adapt.

01

Capability precedes sustainable impact

Sustainable outcomes require people and institutions with the ability to create, manage, adapt, and sustain them.

02

Leadership begins with self-mastery

The ability to lead others begins with the ability to lead oneself.

03

Technology is an enabler, not an end

Technology creates possibilities; human capability determines how effectively those possibilities become value.

04

Security enables development

People, institutions, and enterprises require security and resilience to thrive.

05

Enterprise creates opportunity

Enterprise transforms ideas, capabilities, and resources into economic and social value.

06

The future must be anticipated and shaped

The future is not simply something to predict. It is something to prepare for, influence, and shape.

07

Collaboration multiplies impact

Complex challenges require diverse capabilities, perspectives, and partnerships.

08

Ideas become valuable when translated into action

Knowledge and insight matter most when they create meaningful outcomes.
